From Seattle to Dubai: Grey Design Studio Goes Global With Cascading Chandeliers

Seattle, Wa. May 8, 2008:
Ryan Grey Smith, owner of Grey Design Studio in Seattle, has taken his stunning lighting art from his facility in Seatac to exotic locations around the globe.

The fixtures, some 21-feet in stature, already grace many US locations such as Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, Texas, and Florida, medical buildings in San Diego, Ca., and residences around the country.

Throughout the past year GDS has produced 160 pendants for a Las Vegas hotel, a 48 inch chandelier for a home in Germany, and three chandeliers for Saks Fifth Avenue in Dubai.

In Seattle the company has worked with interior designers to develop five custom chandeliers for Sazerac Restaurant at the Hotel Monaco. These pieces are the studio’s first work in color. The six-foot chandeliers are made of maroon, burgundy, amber and gold hand formed polycarbonate sheets.

Staff at GDS are working on a sizeable commercial project in Southern California. The scope includes 300 fixtures and includes sconces, pendants, large chandeliers, and site specific custom shapes.

About the Designer:
Smith graduated from the University of Southern California Architecture Program in 1995. He worked for three years at DMJM Keating Architecture in Los Angeles, and designed large commercial projects in Indonesia, Korea and Bangkok.

Dale Chihuly, internationally renowned glass artist, asked Smith in 1997 to manage the Chihuly architecture department in Seattle. Smith was responsible for museum and location installations such as Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass in Tacoma, Wa. He also became Chihuly’s personal designer, involved in the complete remodel of the glass artist’s Boathouse, a Seattle combination of private residence, public display and entertaining space.

Smith opened Grey Design Studio in 2003 to provide architectural design to smaller commercial and residential projects. It was then that the designer was commissioned to create an 11-foot lighting fixture. The following year he converted a small prototype into a stunning cascade of light.

In 2003, Smith developed Modern-Shed, a pre-fabricated structure that allows a homeowner to add a new, cost-effective, “green” room to their house. For more information please visit www.modern-shed.com.
